The Turkish government decided to construct the new airport 35km north of Istanbul to replace Atatürk airport. The area encompassed old open-pit coal mines. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on 7 June 2014, though construction only started in May 2015 after the land was officially handed over. The inauguration of the airport took place on the planned date of 29 October 2018. The first landing took place on 20 June 2018.

During this lunch lecture we will explain how we dealt with the challenges we faced:

  • The location, measuring 5km x 7 km, was partly forested and partly used as an open-pit mining area.
  • The subsoil consisted largely of unstable and soft subsoil consisting of mining spoil with a thickness of up to 40m.
  • The elevation varied from approximately sea level to 150 above sea level.
  • Embankment heights up to 70m.
  • Strict ICAO requirements regarding reliability, availability and serviceability safety.
  • Complex geology.
  • High seismic activity.
  • Construction material 70% clay (70% CL and 30% CH) and 30% Ceylan.
  • Due to the huge project scale, local materials had to be used.
