DESCRIPTION:  How to deal with density driven forces on ships navigating t
 hrough the new sea lock IJmuiden\, the biggest sea lock on earth(!)?   De
 ltares has performed scale model experiments in-house to assess the operat
 ion of the biggest sea lock in the world. This enormous new sea lock at IJ
 muiden (500m x 70m) has been built to deal with the increasing socio-econo
 mic demand for larger ship. However\, to design a record breaking sea lock
  it is necessary to assess the operation of the lock for it to remain safe
  and to satisfy to the desires. Faster lock operation allows ships to pass
  more rapidly\, meaning more economic profit. However\, this operation is 
 limited by the presence of forces on the ships and mooring lines. These fo
 rces originate from the flushing of salt water\, with a higher density\, i
 nto the fresh lock chamber for the levelling operation. Nino Zuiderwijk (J
 unior advisor/research Hydraulic structures) will show you in an interesti
 ng hour how it is to work at Deltares on projects like these. He will show
  additional examples of scale model experiments that are being performed a
